How to Create a Writing Habit

ree

In Atomic Habits author James Clear gives an important example of how creating a great amount of work inherently improves quality. According to the book, Professor Jerry Uelsmann split his photography class into two groups.

1. The Quantity Group, which would be graded on the amount of work they produced.

2. The Quality Group, which would be graded on the excellence of one photograph.

The Quantity Group created better photography, Uelsmann said, because they experiment more with lighting, composition, and other technical methods.

They stretched their capacity to create, risking new ideas and by practice alone building a strong practice.

Clear’s point makes sense for writers.

The more you write, the better you push yourself to experiment, dive deeper, learn new strategies, or explore your characters. This may include creating new ideas, committing to one project, and going deeper to revise parts we know are problematic.

Over the next few blogs we’ll look at how to write more creatively, break out of bad habits, and set up methods that work for you. So if writer’s block, stagnation, or disinterest keep you from writing (or if you just want to write more per day), these blogs look at essentials to creating more and experimenting with intensity.
